Knowing who society is and how it works, Salenger wrote a book that not only goes against society, but separates him from all other authors. People will read a book that is full of drugs, cursing, and drinking over the book that is nice, short, and sweet. The same goes for “ The Catcher in the Rye”. Watching the truck flip over is more stunning and impressive than a car hit something. For example, people will pay more attention to the semi-truck that flipped over than the car that hit a pole. Society always pays attention to the bigger, more exaggerated, stunning news. With his writing style, people began to notice, read, and criticize “ The Catcher in the Rye,” all because of one reason Salenger’s exaggerating writing style. Salenger greatly exaggerates Holden, his issues, and society throughout the book and that leads to all of the profanity and drug/alcohol references.
